In 2006, after navigating the difficult task of finding a wonderful nanny job in New York, Dara Epstein knew she wanted to make it easier to help other recent graduates find their ideal nanny position. She started a Facebook group of NYU graduates who were personal friends and interested in babysitting.
In 2009, SmartSitting launched as a babysitting service that matches highly educated sitters with New York parents. After three years, the demand for the service grew exponentially.
“When our business started to grow quickly we had to grow with it to ensure success,” Dara recalls. “But we weren’t sure where to start. We had three active partners at that time and our roles started to overlap and become inefficient.”
SmartSitting reached out to SCORE NYC for guidance on defining their roles and scaling the business.” Diane Drey, our SCORE mentor (and current Chapter Chair), helped us address the red flags for a new company. She taught us everything we needed to know – from finance, to keeping accurate books, doing expenses, hiring and salary discussions.”
Looking back, Dara said, “We really didn’t know what we didn’t know!”
