Willis Chen is one of SCORE’s younger, tech-savvy new mentors, a veteran of several successful start-ups and an expert in social media marketing.
A native of a small Connecticut town, Willis has always been “a man with a plan.” After earning an undergraduate degree in accounting from Lehigh University and working in the field for a while, he found himself drawn to marketing and enrolled in the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management, which offered a mix of business programs.
During breaks at Cornell, Willis interned with a tobacco-products wholesaler and distributor. This exposed him to different types of businesses and multiple aspects of marketing. Most important, he learned how marketers adapt to changing business environments.
After Cornell, Willis joined American Express and became a marketing specialist and team leader in its corporate credit card group. There, he was intensely involved in Internet marketing, new project development, project positioning, and market segmentation.
After six years, he joined Solvate, a funded technology start-up; then Social Flow, a social media optimization platform for brands and publishers, as a principal concentrating on social media marketing. Following those experiences, Willis became a key player at several other start-ups and currently offers his services as a marketing consultant.
As a SCORE mentor, Willis particularly enjoys “the learning and helping that are fundamental to SCORE.” In his spare time, Willis and his girlfriend enjoy playing concierges to visiting friends and relatives and introducing them to New York City.
