In Kirk Imamura, clients find a mentor who has successfully managed a wide range of business roles and responsibilities, from hands-on engineering to technology-product development, plant management, and running a profitable small business.
Born in Tokyo and educated in Japan and the United States, Kirk earned BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he specialized in robotics. Bilingual in Japanese and English, he began his 17-year career with SONY Corporation in Japan, working on the design and manufacture of automated equipment that produced video recorders and disk drives.
Transferred to San Diego, California, he became production manager of a 270-employee manufacturing facility making 32” TV picture tubes on a 24/7 schedule. While on this demanding assignment, he still managed to earn an MBA from San Diego State University. At SONY, Kirk continued on to stints in R&D for HDTV, product planning for new internet products, and business planning for cell phone systems.
In 1996, his wife’s family bought Power Station, a prominent New York recording studio business, from founder and recording star Tony Bongiovi. They renamed it Avatar Studios. He began by consulting and ended as president of the studio. For the past 15 years, he has been involved in its operations and the music industry as a whole.
Kirk joined SCORE because a SCORE mentor and industry veteran mentored him when he first transitioned to the music industry. He serves on the board of two non-profit organizations. Kirk and his wife Chieko live in Manhattan with two spoiled long-haired dachshunds.
